The world of Dust to Dust

In the world of Dust to Dust, people release invisible phantom dust when they die. If this dust isn’t ritually scattered right away, it lingers and merges with more dust, creating increasingly dangerous spectral forms. In recent decades, the C.R.E.E.P. ‘treatment and research’ center has developed technology to capture this phantom residue and store it into high-security containers. Life seems easier for a while, until an accident in the European disposal facility reveals that the extreme compression process has turned the mixed dust into an unforeseen new hazard.

Since water has been found the only reliable way to scatter dust ghosts, the storage facility was built near a dam, high up in the mountains. On the other side of the valley, the technological site now comprises the C.R.E.E.P. research center and scenic tourist sights for hikers and ancient and modern science enthusiasts.

Embody a ghost

The game begins when a massive security breach occurs on site. As swarms of Coalesced creatures break free, the main character of Dust to Dust, a small ghost that had just been captured, is faced with dangerous foes that seek to merge with it and grow even bigger. The only way the smaller ghost can fight back is to snatch the body of a human medium, Matthias, whose gifts are coveted by the immaterial. To survive the chaos, the two will have to work together and expand their combined supernatural powers to find what caused the break and help solve the issue.

The ghost is a vulnerable creature on its own, but it can dash through physical barriers and hide in electronic devices.

When the ghost snatches Matthias’s body, it can destroy the bigger Coalesced creatures, thanks to a phantom scythe with powerful combos and transmutations.

Our levels inspired by the metroidvania genre, enhanced by a 3D top-down view, offer platforms to reach and destroy the vulnerable parts of the biggest Coalesced creatures.

Each of our eight levels is controlled by a sprawling boss entity whose core you will have to locate and annihilate to free up new paths.

The protagonists

A story of friendship in the face of adversity and reclaiming of oneself.

The “Ghost” is a small creature made of benevolent phantom residue that has coalesced naturally. Soon after being captured, it breaks free of its canister when a mysterious explosion occurs at the C.R.E.E.P. treatment facility. Threatened by the bigger ghosts that want to merge with it to grow even larger, it seeks a way to fight back; but the humans on site, who try to contain the breach, also want to neutralize it. Only mediums can see natural ghosts, but how can you convince them to work with you when the only way for you to interact is to snatch their bodies?

20-year-old Matthias works at the scenic restaurant across the river. As a trans man grappling with dysphoria, being a medium feels especially alienating. He applied for a job at the C.R.E.E.P. complex hoping to get better access to ways to defend himself against the body-snatchers. He views his supernatural gifts as curses because of the horrifying risk of possession. Earning his trust will not be easy.

Zora, a 30-year-old R&D specialist in the C.R.E.E.P. security division, tests the new technology developed by the research center. When the now semi-physical Coalesced creatures appear, her superiors want her team to help locate the containers scattered across the site and recapture the escaped ghosts. With a fleet of drones wielding water-cannons, she tries to save Matthias from possession. However, cooperation with benevolent ghosts will turn out to be the only way to meet the true threat.
